Scouts BSA In Cape Girardeau Hosts First Sign-Up Event For Girls

Boy Scouts of America

The local chapter of Boy Scouts of America is hosting a sign-up event tonight for girls interested in joining the organization.

In February, Scouts BSA made the decision to allow girls to participate in the program, formerly known as the Boy Scout Program.

District executive Ashley Metelski says they’ve already heard from several girls who are ‘very interested’ in starting Scouts BSA.

“We found through our national organization that a lot of families were wanting to have one organization that they devote their time to. And so that’s why they made the decision to allow girls,” says Metelski.

Metelski says girls who join a troop will be doing the same things boys have done for many years now, and they’re fortunate to be able to give them that opportunity.

“Really, as long as girls - and this is any gender in particular - as long as kids are being able to have fun in a youth-serving organization, that's really the bigger picture here,” says Metelski.

Metelski says kids fifth grade and up can sign up at the Cape Girardeau Central Junior High School cafeteria tonight from 6-7 p.m. Both the girls-only Troop 22 and boys-only Troop 21 will be present.
