With polls tightening and the election campaign entering its final week, both incumbent Democratic Missouri Governor Jay Nixon and Republican challenger Dave Spence are campaigning on the economy, but with starkly different takes.

Nixon spoke Tuesday at a diner in Wentzville, telling autoworkers from the Wentzville GM plant that over 3 thousand jobs have been created at Missouri auto plants during his four years in office.

Nixon also bragged about the state's unemployment rate.

"That's the 2nd largest drop of any state in the country,” Nixon said. It was 8.6 when I was sworn in, it's 6.9 now. We're not done, but boy we're headed in a direction that clearly sees us continuing to work."

Spence, meanwhile, was making stops in Farmington, Cape Girardeau and Poplar Bluff discussing his plan to increase jobs.

Spence's campaign director, Jared Craighead, says the jobless numbers are misleading because many job seekers have simply given up.

He says Spence would work to make Missouri a more attractive place for business.
