Missouri’s Federal Food Assistance Application For School-aged Children Approved

The U-S-D-A approved Missouri’s application for additional federal food aid for low-income children Monday.

It’s money meant to pay for meals students would’ve eaten at school in March, April and May. But the Missouri Department of Social Services won’t say how much assistance eligible families will receive. Brent Schondelmeyer of the Local Investment Commission, a Kansas City nonprofit, says there are low-income families who haven’t received any pandemic aid yet.

“Depending on when this is delivered, this will be pretty consequential for many families because you may still be waiting for the unemployment check to arrive," Schondelmeyer said. "You still may be waiting for your stimulus check to arrive.”

Kansas’ application was submitted after Missouri’s and approved last month. Eligible Kansas families are getting lump sum payments of $291 per child loaded directly on their benefits card.
