Missouri Democrats Speak Out About Healthcare as Pres. Trump Prepares to Visit Springfield

In advance of President Donald Trump's visit to Springfield, the Missouri Democratic Party is calling on the country's leader to not make cuts to healthcare.

MDP chair, Stephen Webber, was joined by democratic representatives, Crystal Quade of Springfield, Sarah Unsicker of St. Louis County and Greg Razer of Kansas City at a news conference outside Springfield City Hall Tuesday to send the message that “Trump needs to stop trying to take healthcare away from Missourians.”

“We want to be clear that the people of MO are against his harmful and hurtful healthcare cuts,” Webber said.

He pointed out that, during Trump’s campaign, the then-Republican candidate promised to protect Medicaid and expand healthcare for everyone.  But he said the president broke that promise by pushing for a bill that “guts healthcare for millions.”

Quade said democrats are working to get a veto override of House Committee Bill Three, recently vetoed by Governor EricGreitens.  The bipartisan bill restored the governor’s cuts to Medicaid.

According to Quade, the veto resulted in more than 6000 seniors and those with disabilities losing in-home and nursing home care.

“These are folks who rely on these services to get out of bed everyday, to go to work, to be productive members of society and, most importantly, to have dignity,” she said.

According to Quade, Missouri is seeing a “huge job loss with cuts to in-home services,” and she said employees in the nursing home industry are also losing jobs.
