There’s the New York Times Bestseller list, the Goodreads app, the Cape Library’s Staff picks shelf and now Martin’s Must-Reads.Every Wednesday at 6:42 and 8:42 a.m., and Sunday at 8:18 a.m., Betty Martin recommends a must read based on her own personal biases for historical fiction, quirky characters and overall well-turned phrases. Her list includes WWII novels, biographies of trailblazers, novels with truly unique individuals and lots more. Reading close to 100 titles a year, Betty has plenty of titles to share.Local support for "Martin's Must Reads" comes from the Cape Girardeau Public Library and the Poplar Bluff Municipal Library.

Martin's Must Reads: 'Too Good To Be True'

“Still, I take responsibility for what happened to my marriage, that’s what I’m trying to say. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that if you can find a way to make things right, you do it. And if screwing over a desperate, privileged girl is the price, so be it.”

I’m Betty Martin with "Martin’s Must Reads" and that’s a diary entry from Carola Lovering’s psychological thriller Too Good To Be True. Burke and Heather were sweethearts in high school. Burke was there for Heather when an unspeakable tragedy occurred in her family. When they marry,  they dream of leaving their poor upbringings behind to find the good life and give it to their children, but now they are deeply in debt. Heather devises a scheme for Burke to get money from a wealthy, unmarried young woman, Skye Starling.

As the story opens Skye Starling has fallen madly in love with Burke. Suffering from compulsive OCD that began at age twelve when her mother died, Skye never thought she’d find someone to love her so she is thrilled when Burke proposes. Skye doesn’t know that Burke is already married with three children. Lovering uses Burke’s letters to his therapist to reveal the intricate deception.

This is a story of revenge, of how far a father will fall to provide for his family and what happens when love gets in the way.

Save a day to read this book because once you start it you won’t be able to put it down.

If’ you’re looking for an engrossing story, then you must read Too Good To Be True by Carola Lovering.

Betty Martin was born in Boston, Massachusetts to a Lutheran pastor and his organist wife. Betty’s love of books was inspired by her father who read to all four children each night.
