Let's Talk Business: Cape Graduate Retention: Key to Area Growth

Cape Chamber

Each year, less than 20% of Southeast Missouri State University graduates will live and work in the Cape Girardeau area.

In addition, many students graduate with very limited experience in their chosen profession. In a world where a capable and trained workforce is the key to area growth, this is not desired information. Thanks to a partnership between the Chamber and Southeast Missouri State University, this issue is being addressed.
connectCAPE is a program designed to bridge the gap between students and local employers through a variety of programs. As a result, not only will students have a better feel for their future career choices, but they will also better understand the wide range of job opportunities available in our region.

Two main parts of connectCAPE include job shadowing and internships. In job shadowing, students can spend a minimum of 10 hours in a local business learning what really happens day to day. Internships provide actual hands on experience and an inside look to their future. Either way, students and regional employers benefit.

The chamber plans to extend connectCAPE into the high schools. As we know, many graduating high school seniors are seeking alternatives to a four year institution.

University students interested in participating in the connectCAPE program should contact Career Services at careerservices@semo.edu. Businesses interested in students for job shadowing or internships should also contact Career Services or Kim Voelker at the Chamber.
