Going Public: Jackson Mayor Talks COVID-19 Response, High Number Of Cases Across The City

Lindsey Grojean/KRCU

The City of Jackson has the highest count of Covid-19 cases in Cape Girardeau County, containing 13 of the 24 cases announced on Wednesday.

Mayor Dwain Hahs says 6 of those cases could be traced back to a single point of origin in mid-March. Hahs and city officials hold daily briefings on the latest information about the pandemic and how it impacts the city.

Hahs says that the city has closed many different public locations such as the city playground, skateparks, and the recycling center.

He says that the local community has great healthcare, and the city is well-positioned based on its proximity to health institutions.

“[The hospitals are] taking the lead on testing with the setup of the testing site at Arena Park,” Hahs said. “Both hospitals have other testing sites that they're doing.”

During this time, Hahs calls on businesses and individuals to limit contact with others and socially distance.
