Do You Watch City Council Meetings On Channel 993? After Next Week, You Won't Be Able To

You might not have known this, but Cape Girardeau has a public access station on cable TV - but not for much longer.

Public information manager Nicolette Brennan with the city of Cape Girardeau said they will be shutting down Channel 993, which was only available to certain Charter Spectrum subscribers.

The content on the station was vast, covering anything from group meetings to adoptable pets to church and charity events. It was free to advertise on, and people interested in being featured could submit videos or slideshow announcements.

In 2007, state regulations changed, which ended the channel’s funding and moved it from its original broadcast on Channel 5.

In an email, Brennan explained that the city decided to stop investing in the channel years ago, and that it was more useful before this day and age where folks can self-publicize using social media and their smartphones.

“We kept it running as long as possible, knowing some people still might use it sometimes,” said Brennan. “But now that community groups can promote themselves online, and the city can publish and broadcast online, there just isn’t enough demand.”

City Council meetings were also aired on the platform, but those will remain on the city’s YouTube Channel.
