To Cope With A High Number Of Incoming Cats, Humane Society Plans A Free Adoption Event

Lindsey Grojean/KRCU

They’re basically giving these cats away! Actually... they are.

In response to high numbers of cats taken in throughout the summer, the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri will be waiving adoption fees during a three-day “Feline Frenzy” event this weekend. In addition to free adoption, all vaccinations, spayings, neuterings, and microchipping will be paid for by local veterinarians and JSE Surplus gun store.

Development Director Jennifer Sokolowski says the event should help them accomplish a sustainable, “no-kill” level with their feline population, and free up some space for additional cats on their waiting list.

“Every summer it becomes a major issue,” she said. “We always get in more cats than we can handle.”

The Humane Society takes in cats from the surrounding area, and also contracts with local cities and their animal control departments. Sokolowski says they bring in roughly 3,000 animals a year, which are usually half dogs and half cats. Currently, the shelter is at “no-kill” with their dog population.

“We do not want to have to euthanize cats for any reason at all,” she says. “But it does take the support of the community.”

According to Sokolowski, it’s the first time they’ve ever had a total free adoption event. In the past, certain fees have been waived.

For those interested in adopting a cat, you will need to apply that day. Potential pet parents will not have to go through home checks, though. The event will be held at the Humane Society at 2536 Boutin Drive in Cape Girardeau from 12 p.m. on Saturday, July 20 to 3 p.m. on Monday, July 22.
