Cape Central Junior High School Ribbon Cutting Ceremony For New Library

Cape Central Junior High School held a ribbon cutting ceremony for their new library on Thursday.

The new facility has been named the Louis Lorimier Library, a dedication to the man credited with founding Cape Girardeau.

Previously, the Cape Central Junior High library was located in the basement of the main building.

Neil Glass is the Assistant Superintendent at Cape Central. He says the new facility will not only offer more space for students and faculty, but will be a more conducive learning environment.

Featuring a media lab, resource center, and individual study rooms, Glass says the library centers more on students’ needs.

“We wanted to focus on a nucleus where students could come in and really get an environment that they could feel comfortable in and come in and do their research and do their reading and do similar things like that, that we’d like to see in education,” Glass said.

Libby Wilson, the librarian and media specialist for Cape Central,  worked hand-in-hand with architects to design the new library layout.

“We have the periodicals on display as opposed to just on a bookshelf somewhere. We have this homework station which added five new computers to our library and those are open all of the time,” Wilson said. “Even if the lab is full, kids can still come in and do research individually from classes.”

Wilson’s layout and design choices inspired Bond Architects to dedicate a new library design line in her name. Wilson says architecture magazines have expressed interest in featuring the library in future issues.

Cape Girardeau Board of Education officials say they hope the library serves as an inspiration to other schools within the region.
