All About Cape: Playmo's Birthday and the Capaha Classic 5K

On Wednesday, July 12th, the Parks and Recreation Department has us up and moving. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Osage Centre, it’s a birthday party for Playmo, Parks and rec’s mascot.  He’s celebrating the big six with ice cream and games, and he’s invited his young friends.  Of course, his older friends are welcome too.  It’s nonstop fun, with obstacle courses, Nerf guns and more.  Fun fact:  Nerf balls were originally part of a volleyball-based game made by the same guy who invented Twister - the game, not the movie.

If Nerf guns and ice cream aren’t enough to take you back to your childhood, “Space Jam” is sure to do the trick.  If you can’t place it, the film stars Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny.  They gather a group of Looney Tunes to go head to head in a basketball game against a team of villains.  The bad guys have stolen talent from famous NBA players (well, retired players now).  If you want to know more about the movie, go to Spacejam.com.  It hasn’t been updated since 1996, when it was launched.  Or head to Capaha Park on Friday, July 12th to watch this classic film.  The show starts at 9 p.m.

This week rounds out with the Capaha Classic 5K on Saturday, July 13th, 2019 marks the 32nd year for the race, placing its beginning in the era of “The Golden Girls” and “Full House.” Adults are invited to test their endurance at the 5K, while kids compete in a one-mile run designed for shorter legs.  Check-in starts at 6:45 a.m. in Capaha Park, and runners take off at 8.
