All About Cape: A Bustling Mississippi

Visit Cape

The Mississippi is bustling this month, with boats and barges passing by our community. Cape Girardeau and the river have both played a major role in the transportation of goods and people since before the town’s founding. Take part in a Cape tradition by welcoming the boats docking in town this month.

On August 14, the paddlewheeler America will drop anchor here. Living up to its name, the America was built in the U.S. and proudly flies several American flags as it travels along the river. Only two years old, this boat brings the latest state-of-the-art innovations to the Mississippi.

August 31 offers an opportunity to see the world’s largest steamboat – the American Queen. It’s made for luxury, being known as the “most opulent steamboat in the world.” With six decks, a gym, a spa and more, the American Queen is river travel at its grandest.

Even though riverboat tours are not available, standing along the bank and watching these boats pull into port continues two centuries of tradition along the Mississippi River, making it a Cape Girardeau must-do. And there’s no telling who you’ll meet as passengers disembark.
