Mid-October means one thing: It’s time to talk about Halloween. For a few days, this charming midwestern town turns into a frightening community filled with ghosts and ghouls. OK, it’s not that bad. But we do have some haunted houses and maybe a ghost or two.
The world’s first haunted house was the Chamber of Horrors in 19th century London. Marie Tussaud hosted an exhibit of wax sculptures of famous French citizens, like Marie Antoinette – all decapitated. But the person who made haunted houses part of American culture was none other than Walt Disney, when he opened the Haunted Mansion in 1969.
Cape’s haunted houses cater to your fear level. Park’s and Rec’s Haunted Hall of Horror is the ideal spot to face your fear, whether it’s clowns, chainsaws or Michael Myers masks. Located at the A.C. Brase Arena from 7 to 11 p.m. every Friday and Saturday now through Halloween. Another thrilling haunt is the Black Forest Haunted Ghost Town. Their motto: “Scare you soon.” Do you have the guts to brave it?
We know these haunted houses are designed, but many paranormal investigators have uncovered real hauntings in Cape. Bloomfield Road is one of the most haunted highways in Missouri, with the screams of Mad Lucy echoing across it and a headless traveler roaming up and down the lane. The downtown district shelters ghosts of decades past within its grand antebellum buildings. A downtown Halloween walking tour provides the perfect opportunity to meet one.
