  Cape Central Junior High School held a ribbon cutting ceremony for their new library on Thursday.

The new facility has been named the Louis Lorimier Library, a dedication to the man credited with founding Cape Girardeau.

Previously, the Cape Central Junior High library was located in the basement of the main building. 

Neil Glass is the Assistant Superintendent at Cape Central. He says the new facility will not only offer more space for students and faculty, but will be a more conducive learning environment.

Education Committee Works On Funding Formula For Higher Education

The Missouri legislative panel held its second of three higher education hearings Tuesday at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg.

The legislature’s Joint Committee on Education is working to develop a funding formula that would divide state money given to higher education institutions. State Representative Mike Lair said he would like to see Missouri’s community colleges included in the new budget. But, he said the new budget’s success depends on cooperation from all office holders.

Regents Approve Feasibility Of River Campus Expansion

The Southeast Missouri State University Board of Regents on Friday gave the university approval to come up with a final design for a new River Campus building.

The structure will include both residential and academic space. Preliminary plans call for a four story structure, but that could change. 

The bottom floor will feature space for music and dance, as well as a dining facility. The top three floors will hold apartment-style living spaces with 160 beds.

Southeast Campus Construction On Schedule

Southeast Missouri State University’s campus is still under construction in different areas on campus. And the construction is still on schedule.

The construction includes renovations to Magill Hall and Academic Hall. A new residence hall is also being built, and the Scully building is expected to open a Subway sometime this spring.

According to Southeast’s Kathy Mangels, all of the projects are currently within budget.

Cape Girardeau Honors Educators of the Year

The Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce Education Committee honored their 2012 Educators of the Year this Tuesday.

Four outstanding educators, ranging from elementary to university level, were recognized.

Stacy Stapleton, a third grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary, was among the honorees.  She says it is nice to see the community recognize educators for all of their hard work.

Stapleton says for her, teaching is a passion.
