Two-Minute Drill: Zagurski Earns Prestigious OVC Scholar-Athlete Award

Southeast Athletics

Southeast Missouri track and field senior thrower Stephen Zagurski has been chosen to receive the prestigious Ohio Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Award for 2018-19. The award is the highest individual honor that can be earned by OVC student-athletes and is given annually to three men and three women for their accomplishments in both the classroom and athletic arena, and because of their leadership qualities.

Zagurski, a senior from Papillion, Nebraska, enters his final year of competition with Southeast. In 2017, he was awarded silver in the hammer throw at the OVC Championship (200-6, 61.12m) and competed in the NCAA West Preliminary in the event. Zagurski also finished fifth in discus (153-9, 46.87m) and sixth in shot put (51-1, 15.57m) at the conference meet.

As a sophomore, he was a bronze finisher in hammer at the OVC Championship and was also fifth in discus and sixth in shot put. In 2016, he placed sixth in hammer as a freshman.

Zagurski currently ranks third all-time in Southeast Missouri history in the hammer throw (201-2) and eighth all-time in the weight throw (57-2.25).

In the classroom, he has a 4.0 grade point average in environmental science: geo-processing and soils with a minor in geographic information systems at SEMO. Zagurski has earned multiple OVC Academic Medal of Honor and OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll awards as well as being named to the Dean's List. He is a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and is a student-athlete representative to the OVC's Competition Cabinet.

This weekend, the Redhawks Volleyball and Football teams both play at home. Volleyball will play tonight at 6:30 p.m. inside Houck Field House. The Football team, which is currently ranked 24th in the nation, will host Tennessee State tomorrow at 1 p.m., followed by volleyball senior night at 5 p.m.
