Two-Minute Drill: SEMO Football Playoff Hopes Are Alive

Southeast Athletics

Southeast Missouri outside linebacker Justin Swift was named Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week Sunday. The honor marks Swift's second of the season.

Swift scored a pair of defensive touchdowns (60-yard fumble return, 76-yard interception return) last week against Murray State. He also added eight tackles and assisted on a sack. His fumble return was the fourth-longest and his interception return was second-longest in school history.

SEMO has won a league-high 14 OVC weekly awards in 2018.

Although they lost in heartbreaking fashion at Murray State, the Redhawks’ FCS Playoffs hopes are still very much alive. With a win tomorrow, the Redhawks would be in great position to earn one of 14 at-large berths into the FCS Playoff field of 24 teams. A win would improve SEMO’s record to 8-3, including a convincing win over top-five Jacksonville State. The combination of eight Division I wins and a victory against a top-5 ranked opponent are something that no other team on the bubble can boast.

Several national writers who closely follow FCS Football have projected the Redhawks to make their way into the playoff bracket with a win over Eastern Illinois tomorrow. HERO Sports’ Sam Herder ranked the Redhawks playoff chances as “likely.” The FCS Playoff bracket and match-ups will be revealed Sunday at 11:30 a.m. during the FCS Selection Show, televised live on ESPNU.

Southeast finishes off the regular season with a home game against EIU tomorrow at Houck Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., and the Redhawks will recognize its 15 seniors before the game at approximately 12:45. SEMO Athletics is also partnering with local Boy Scouts for the Scouting for Food drive: fans can bring three nonperishable food items to receive discounted general admission.
