Two-Minute Drill: Redhawks Collect Conference Honors

Southeast Athletics

Sophomore outside hitter Laney Malloy was named the Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.

Malloy led the Southeast Missouri women's volleyball team offensively last week with 63 kills over four matches to produce a team high 68.5 points.

Head coach Julie Yankus said Malloy is playing some great defense and she is terminating efficiently in the front row.

Malloy, a transfer from Illinois-Chicago, is currently ranked fifth in the OVC with 3.31 kills per set. She is also the first Redhawk to win an OVC Weekly award since Jade Mortimer earned OVC Defensive Player of the Week on Nov. 7, 2016.

The Redhawks volleyball team concluded its non-conference slate earlier this week with wins at Western Illinois and Northern Illinois, and they will head into OVC play next week with an 8-5 overall record, the best start to a season since 1999.

Meanwhile, on the gridiron, quarterback Daniel Santacaterina was selected as the OVC Co-Offensive Player and Newcomer of the Week, and kicker Nicholas Litang was Co-Specialist of the Week.

Santacaterina threw for 269 yards and three touchdowns and ran for five yards and another touchdown to lead SEMO to its first win of the season against Dayton.

Litang, who hails from Boca Raton, Florida, scored 10 points against the Flyers. Litang did not miss a kick the entire game, connecting on 2-of-2 field goals and 4-of-4 extra points. He scored SEMO's first six points of the contest on field goals of 37 and 35 yards, respectively.

The SEMO Football team heads to Carbondale tomorrow to play regional rival Southern Illinois Salukis in the annual War for the Wheel.
