Southeast Considers Outsourcing Bookstore, Textbook Rental

Southeast Missouri State University is considering outsourcing their bookstore and textbook rental services.

Vice President for Finance and Administration Kathy Mangels says no decision has been made, but the university has accepted three vendor bids: Barnes & Noble, Follett, and The University of Missouri Bookstore. The three vendors will have open forums on campus to address any questions or concerns.

Mangels says the university is looking to accommodate rapidly advancing technology into their textbook services.

“Technology is changing the textbook industry so much, and we want to make sure our students have access to the latest technology so when they graduate and leave this institution, they’ve got the experience with technology they need for their future career,” Mangels said.

Mangels believes an outside vendor may keep student costs low and and offer more options like e-books.

“What we’re looking for is how other companies or universities are incorporating technology into the whole textbook industry,” Mangels said. “So, how have they figured out how to still maintain an affordable rental-type program but make access to electronic materials affordable also for our students.”

Mangels and others will propose their recommended decision to the Board of Regents at an April or May meeting.
