The Red Star community held its second meeting for the Cape Girardeau Neighborhood Development Initiative on Tuesday night.

Residents nominated community leaders and picked the name, Red Star Neighborhood Revival, for their association. Over twenty people attended the meeting at the Red Star Baptist Activity Center, growing from their first meeting last month.

“If everybody comes with their problems and then we address those problems and then prioritize them and give them to the city,” resident John Gregory said. “The city can’t go and do everything, so it’s up to us to do it. If there’s a lot that needs to be cleaned up, let’s go clean it up.”

Gregory was chosen as one of the community leaders, along with Robert Loyd and Brian Allerding.

Assistant City Manager Molly Hood explained in the meeting that the neighborhood association’s purpose is to address the community’s issues and begin to find solutions through community service and communication with the city.

“I think the major issues facing this neighborhood are  property maintenance, litter, trash, traffic issues and just general upkeep,” Hood said.

During the meeting, residents also defined the neighborhood area as going from Cape Rock Dr. down the the bottom of the Isle Casino Cape Girardeau. The area also was modified to go from Big Bend Road all the way east to the railroad tracks. This was in an attempt to include major businesses into the borders.

This is the second neighborhood in which the city has developed the Neighborhood Development Initiative. The first was in southern Cape Girardeau and had meetings last year. The city’s long-term plan is to create a Neighborhood Association Coalition that comprises of the multiple neighborhood groups working together.

The Red Star Neighborhood Revival plans to meet at 6 p.m. the first Tuesday of every month at the Red Star Baptist Activity Center.
