A Preview of the 2018 Women's Tennis Team

Southeast Athletics

After making the Ohio Valley Conference Championship for the first time in a decade, the Southeast Missouri women’s tennis team is optimistic and eager for the arrival of the 2018 season.

Head coach Mary Beth Gunn enters her third season with the Redhawks after leading a huge turnaround in her second year. Southeast posted a 13-7 overall record in 2017 with a 5-4 mark in the OVC after going 1-19 and 0-10 in league play the previous season. The Redhawks advanced to the OVC Tournament for the first time in 10 seasons.

Sophomore Oleksandra Doroshenko garnered OVC Freshman of the Year honors and was also named to the Second-Team All-OVC. Doroshenko is only the second Redhawk to win the OVC Freshman of the Year award, and the first since 2011.

The 2018 team features four returners and three freshmen. And while there are no seniors on the squad, Coach Gunn said juniors and sophomores come in with a lot of successful match experience and the freshmen class is tremendously talented.

In addition to Doroshenko, Kseniya Zonova compiled a 13-7 singles record as a freshman last season. During the exhibition season this past fall, the sophomore was a semifinalist in the consolation bracket at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Regional Championship with a win over Iowa.

Isabella Krupa and Anais Emelie will lead the team as the only two juniors. Krupa recorded five wins at the top singles position, and she totaled 14-6 record at no. 1 doubles alongside Doroshenko. Emelie had 10 singles wins and 10 doubles victories Zonova in 2017.

The Redhawks opened the 2018 season last weekend with tough matchups against the University of Missouri and Central Arkansas, but Doroshenko and freshman Alessandra Maya Thompson and picked up a doubles victory against Mizzou.

The squad travels to Peoria, Illinois this weekend where they’ll play matches against Bradley and Northern Illinois. Stay tuned to GoSoutheast.com for match results and recaps.
