KRCU recently installed new equipment that allows stations to insert small bits of information into their transmission signal. The system is called RDS (Radio Data System). One thing to remember is that some radios aren’t set up to display RDS data. So if you don’t see the extra characters, your radio probably doesn’t display it.
We installed the system at the 90.9 FM transmitter site in September and the 88.9 FM site in October. This is just another way to let listeners know what station they are listening to (especially those who may be scanning around for a new station). Currently the RDS display reads “K R C U Public Radio for S.E. Missouri” along with our web address “KRCU.ORG."
In the future, we hope to add more information to the feed including what program is airing and if a music show is on, what song or work is currently on the air.
If you have any questions about RDS, just let us know. We’d be happy to answer them. You can call us anytime at (888) 651-5070 or send an email to comments@krcu.org
