Let's Talk Business: Magnet Works to Foster Strong Economic Environment

Cape Chamber

The Mission of the Cape Girardeau Area MAGNET is to foster a strong economic environment resulting in the retention, expansion, creation, and attraction of jobs and new investment in the area.

The Cape Area MAGNET is a regional economic development organization funded by five different groups: the cities of Cape, Jackson, and Scott; Cape Girardeau County; and the Cape Chamber. It is governed by a seven person board of directors and housed in the offices of the Cape Chamber. MAGNET has a full time staff person working directly with members of the Cape and Jackson Chambers, and representatives and volunteers from the funding organizations.

MAGNET also partners with several other organizations in accomplishing its mission. The Missouri Partnership is the state group responsible for recruiting outside business and industry to the state of Missouri and serves as a lead generation source for MAGNET. In addition, the Missouri Department of Economic Development is a strong partner and helps with expansion of existing business and industry as well as a source for incentives.

Recruiting efforts of MAGNET include site selector visits, direct mail, electronic newsletters, and relationship maximization. MAGNET enjoys strong partnerships, relationships, and results. The organization formed in 1992 and has played a part in bringing more than 100 businesses and thousands of jobs to the area.

Challenges are ahead in addressing workforce and infrastructure. MAGNET is ready to meet them and continue moving forward.

John Mehner is the former President and CEO of the Cape Chamber.
