This week we have the unfortunate occasion to feature a great musician from a great band, Carey Lander, keyboard-player and backup vocalist of Camera Obscura, who died October 11 at the age of 33.

I saw new music from Maritime in my inbox and thought about the term emo and how that word now means so many things, most of which are meant to be derisive. But bands like the afore mentioned Maritime plus their predecessors The Promise Ring and The Dismemberment Plan, alongside such bands as American Football and Braid, were more about post-rock instrumentation and cleverness than they were about suburban brattiness.

Speaking of youthful aggression, The Garden, a band comprised of Orange County twins are channeling that into something unique.

I received a request to play "Sleepyhead" by Passion Pit, a song that I'd not heard in some time. In reading up on it I came upon the song that was used as the ridiculously sugary sample for that track.

Left of the Dial airs Friday nights from 9:00 to 11:00 and Saturdays from noon to 2:00 on KRCU.
