Left Of The Dial #521 - Above Ground Radio

KRCU

This week we're featuring something truly interesting and unusual. Dr. Demento is a radio personality who got started at the underground freeform station KPPC in Pasadena, CA. A colleague referred to the jockey as “demented” for playing "Transfusion" by Nervous Norvus on the air and the name stuck. His show was known for playing novelty comedy records and he's famous for introducing his audience to a young “Weird Al” Yankovic. A new album, Dr. Demento Covered in Punk, is a collection of punk rock versions of some of the songs he’d play on his show. It features appearances from the B-52’s, Los Straitjackets, and The Dead Milkmen. It’s also presented like a radio program, with skits, jingles, and song intros from the man himself.

Left of the Dial airs Friday nights from 9-11 and Saturdays from noon-2 on KRCU.

Thanks Pete, for the Apple Music playlist! Dig those Drag City tunes...
