Don't Miss a Serious Spy Story Played Mainly for Laughs at the River Campus this Summer

Southeast Missouri State University

Big screen classics are taking the stage at the River Campus this summer.

"The 39 Steps" was adapted from the novel and the Hitchcock film, but you can see it at the River Campus as part of this year’s Summer Arts Festival. Unfamiliar with this one? We’ll let director Kenn Stilson give you all details on this serious spy story played mainly for laughs.

"The 39 Steps" is one of the funniest plays you'll ever see. I would classify it as a melodrama or a satire of a melodrama. The satire itself is...it takes place in England and Scotland. It's very similar to Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones' '"The Fugitive." So this would be the very first of those types of chase movies in which somebody is falsely accused of something and then it goes on this chase that goes across countries. It would be on the same line as Monty Python. As a matter of fact, people even will compare it to like some of their early sketches and everything. As a matter of fact it even has a feel of a Monty Python. But they're playing -- there's an innkeeper and his wife who have a really deep Scottish brogue and then they play police and politicians and just name it and they just go through the gamut and they play these different characters, so it's great fun.

You can get your tickets now at River Campus.org. Next week, we’ll chat about "Legally Blonde, Jr." and as always, this is Ellen Farrow and I hope to see you soon at the Box Office!
