The St. Louis Cardinals pounded pitcher Jordan Zimmerman and the Washington Nationals Monday afternoon 12 to 4 to even the League Division Series at one game apiece.

The Cardinals strafed Zimmerman for five runs in the game’s first three innings. They continued to pile on against the Nationals’ bullpen.

The Cardinals attack was fueled by the long ball. Allen Craig and Daniel Descalso hit home runs early in the game to give the Redbirds the lead, while Carlos Beltran clobbered two long homes late to put the contest out of reach.

Center fielder Jon Jay contributed two hits and three RBI’s and provided a highlight-reel catch in the sixth inning as he caught Danny Espinosa’s long fly ball while simultaneously crashing into the outfield wall.

The best of five series now goes to the nation’s capital. Last year’s postseason hero Chris Carpenter will take the mound for the Cardinals. The Nationals will counter will ex-Cardinal Edwin Jackson.
