The City of Cape Girardeau adopted a new public art policy that will establish guidelines for art acquisition and placement.

It establishes an ad hoc Public Art Committee that will advise city staff and council on public art acquisition, placement, and liability.

The first step is to create a master plan that will be used to determine locations for permanent and temporary art, according to Parks and Recreation Director Julia Thompson.

“I think most cities that as they grow, they look at, especially Cape with its regional appeal, how can we expand on all of those quality areas in the city that makes Cape Girardeau a place that people want to come and live and visit and art is one of those,” Thompson said.

Thompson says the policy gives the city and artists some guidelines.

“One of our first plans is to develop a Strategic Plan, or an Art Plan,” Thompson said. “Where should art go? Where should permanent art go? Where could we have temporary art exhibits and displays?”

The Public Art Committee will present its master plan to city council by the end of the year.
