All About Cape: Pre-Christmas Festivities

Visit Cape

Basketball is to Christmas what football is to Thanksgiving. Since 1947, the NBA has hosted games on all but one December 25. Each year, holiday matchups showcase the best teams and all-star players.

Cape has its own version of that tradition in the Holiday Classic – three days of layups and alley-oops from the top girls basketball teams in the area. On December 16, 17 and 19, Cape Central, Jackson, Notre Dame, Saxony, Sikeston, Meadow Heights, Woodland and St. Paul Lutheran players show their skills as they battle against each other at the Show Me Center. Don’t miss your chance to see up-and-coming potential WNBA stars in action.

If basketball doesn’t seem very festive to you, a shopping trip to our local stores to grab last-minute gifts will have you humming carols. Not sure what to get? The top five items on wish lists this year are gift cards, clothing, books, electronics and home décor, according to the National Retail Federation. And Cape Girardeau stores have it all. Plus, several of our local shops (and the VisitCape office) offer exclusive items that showcase your hometown or favorite getaway spot – Cape shirts, books by local authors, even commemorative Christmas ornaments featuring landmarks across town.

Also happening this week: Santa’s taking time for an exclusive pre-Christmas visit to Discovery Playhouse. He’ll be there on December 21 from noon to 2 p.m. After your child has met their favorite celebrity, stick around to explore a kid-size grocery store, dental clinic, art studio, planetarium and much more. You might even find yourself getting in on the fun.
