All About Cape: Halloween Festivities

Visit Cape

Did you know that a headless man wanders Bloomfield Road this time of year? Or that a woman named Mary shows up in Southeast's Rose Theater occasionally? Or that a ghost named Belle plays tricks on the staff of the Port Cape Restaurant?

With Halloween approaching, Cape Girardeau becomes a mecca for ghost hunters looking for a supernatural thrill - think floating orbs, unexplained footsteps and "otherworldly" screams. If you enjoy an adrenaline rush, join a Haunted Downtown Walking Tour. Whether you're a thrill seeker or history buff, this after-dark guided tour will bring Cape's legendary murders and hauntings to life. And you may even see a specter or two. If that doesn't put enough shivers down your spine, the Boos on Broadway walking tour focuses on the ghosts who live on one of Cape's busiest streets.

For those too chicken to face real ghosts (hey, no judgment here), more traditional haunted houses are available this month. The Black Forest Haunted Ghost Town, where the Grim Reaper is waiting, operates on Fridays and Saturdays in October. Plus, there are family-friendly startles at the annual Haunted Hall of Horror in the Arena Building on Fridays and Saturdays beginning October 12, as well as Halloween of course.

Cape's Halloween festivities culminate on October 31 with trick or treating in the evening. Whether you plan to hand out candy, chaperone the kids or dress up yourself, it's a great time to indulge in some sweets. If going door to door doesn't sound appealing, Lazy L Safari Park is hosting Boo at the Zoo on October 27, a chance to trick or treat with the animals. Or check out Parks and Rec’s Halloween Hoopla on October 26 – featuring pumpkin bowling, decorating, a costume contest and more.
