All About Cape: Fall Activities

Visit Cape

In case you haven't noticed yet, fall is in the air. And it's prettiest on the Mississippi River - with bright leaves and rippling waves. Remember how you felt as a kid jumping in a pile of leaves? You can experience that same euphoria by exploring Cape Girardeau's autumn scenery - some of the most stunning around.

Begin your day with a cup of coffee from one of our local coffeehouses, offering exclusive seasonal flavors. Then head to the Old Bridge Overlook Park to take in autumn views framed by the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge. It's the ideal spot to relax and reflect in the peace and quiet of a downtown morning.

If you want to go deeper in nature, start your journey at the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center's White Oak Trace. This two-mile trail goes through rolling hills and valleys - getting you up close and personal with Southeast Missouri foliage and, if you're lucky, some local wildlife too. A hike along this trail contains plenty of ravines for climbing and exploring.

The Trail of Tears State Park also offers incredible autumn panoramas. Imagine standing on a cliff looking at the Mississippi below as a barge travels by along a backdrop of golden and scarlet trees. With several trails to choose from, the hike may be a challenge but the view at the end is well worth it. While you're in the area, try your hand at fishing by casting a line into Lake Boutin. This twenty acres stocked with catfish, perch and carp creates a serene oasis to bask in fall temperatures before winter comes along. So grab a sweater and get cozy.
