A legend is coming to town. The iconic Harlem Globetrotters basketball team will take the Show Me Center court on Wednesday, January 16. Despite the team’s name, they actually originated much closer to Cape Girardeau – near Chicago, Illinois.
Since its formation in the nineteen twenties, the team has truly lived up to its Globetrotters name, playing in 123 countries and setting several world records in the process. A few NBA stars have worn a Globetrotters jersey over the years, including the legendary Wilt Chamberlain. Even the non-sports fans in your family will enjoy the comedy of these showmen and -women, as the roster boasts quite a few female players.
Cape Girardeau continues its athletic tradition by welcoming a newer sport to the SportsPlex. The SEMO Chemo Smash Pickleball Tournament will take place on January 19 and 20. Pickleball is similar to Ping-Pong, only it’s life size. And it’s starting to grow in popularity, offering amateur and pro tournaments and even a U.S. Open. The perfect place to see it in action is at the tournament. Who knows? Maybe you’ll discover a new hobby.
Although we love sports in Cape Girardeau, we value the fine arts equally. Get in touch with your musical side by attending “La Perichole” on January 18 and 20 at Bedell Performance Hall on the Southeast River Campus. It is a romantic musical – nineteenth century style.
