Did you know Missouri vines saved the French wine industry in the eighteen seventies? Tiny bugs were ravaging France’s vineyards, destroying nearly forty percent of the country’s grapevines. A few helpful Missourians sent about four hundred thousand vine cuttings to France because our vines were resistant to the bugs. France recovered from the infestation, and it was all thanks to Missouri vines.

So take a weekend to pay tribute to this wonderful vine by visiting our local wineries.

Plato stated that, “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.”

A true sign that summer is coming to an end is fair season! The SEMO District Fair is one of the longest running fairs in Missouri. It has been providing families with entertainment for 163 years.

It’s all coming back. The rides. The lights. The games. The entertainment. The FOOD. Not to mention the giant vegetables and amazing livestock.

That’s right. The SEMO District Fair will be in full swing September 8 - 15.

Before you run to grab your deep-fried Oreos or turkey drumsticks, here are three more ways to enjoy the event:

We are in the dog days of summer. During this time it is a wonderful opportunity to take a hike on one of the great trail systems in Cape County Park or the Trail of Tears. There you will find that the temperature may be 15 degrees cooler than on the paved parking lot in the middle of town. Keep in mind the theory of cement vs gravel. You know that there has never been a day that you could fry an egg on that flat rock in the woods.

It’s back-to-school time, and I can hear sighs of relief coming from parents all across town. It also means things are about to get busier, with sports in full swing, including a local favorite – Cape Central football! Keep your eye on the high school sports schedules to find out when to cheer on the Tigers. Be sure to mark your calendars for the Central vs Jackson rivalry. The team that wants to win must earn it with sweat, determination and heart! This is always a great game from the fans to the plays on the field.
